◾ Payslip Summary
Your payslip shows the summary of this payslip at the top. This includes your full name and residential address, the pay period start & end dates, the date payment was submitted to the bank, and your tax code and IRD number.
It also details summary financial figures including the gross earnings (pre tax/deductions) the amount contributed to your KiwiSaver account, and the net payment total (e.g. payment total you will receive).
Your base hourly rate is also shown in the payslip summary (rounded to 2x decimal places).
◾ Payslip Wages & Earnings
⚠️ NOTE: The the Tempus platform is typically an "hours" oriented system when it calculates your wages and earnings. If you are accustomed to seeing your annual salary displayed against your Ordinary Hours line item, you can determine your annual salary by multiplying your rate (x) contract hours worked per year [contract hours per week x 52 weeks].
There are some occasions where wages and earnings lines are not typically calculated using the "hours" method. For example a unit allowance or a lump-sum bonus payment.
If you need to understand if a particular wages & earnings line is expressed in either 'hours' or 'units'; speak to your payroll contact; who will aim to assist you.
Next your payslip shows you a summary of your wages and earnings. Here we can see the different "pay interpretations" being paid, the total of hours for that interpretation; and the rate at which that interpretation was paid. In the below example we can see this person was paid 37.50 hours of 'ordinary' time, and 2.00 hours of 'time-and-a-half'.
When reviewing this information, understand that any "pay interpretation" you have been paid in the past will always show in this section. For example if every 3 months you receive a 'bonus' payment; then the 'bonus' pay interpretation will always show. To easily identify what you are being paid for in this payslip; focus on the "This Pay" column.
◾ Payslip Taxes, Deductions, KiwiSaver
Next your payslip shows you any taxes deducted. For most; this is typically just 1x line item called PAYE (known as Pay As You Earn Tax).
Next any pre-tax (and/or) post-tax deductions will be detailed (where they exist). If you have a deduction showing on your payslip this is likely because you requested for it to be made, or your employer was required to make the deduction on your behalf.
Next are your KiwiSaver contribution details (where they exist). Your contribution is the "employee" line item; and the contribution rates are shown in each line as the % expression. Your Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT) is also detailed in the KiwiSaver section.
◾ Payslip Reimbursements
Next you will see any expense reimbursements detailed on your payslip. This would only be present if your company uses the reimbursement feature of Tempus.
◾ Payslip Payments
Next are the details of how your net payment/s have been made. For most; these payments will be made electronically and the name of the account, the account number (obfuscated for security purposes), and the total payment to that account number are shown in this section. In this section we only have a "This Pay" column.
⚠️ NOTE: Did you know you can have your net pay sent to more than one bank account? The Tempus platform can support sending a specified dollar amount to a certain account (this could be useful for a fixed expense like rent/mortgage) or a percentage amount (e.g. a casual might like to have a percentage of their net pay paid to a separate account; to have as cash reserve for when they need time off). To arrange this; speak to your payroll contact; who will aim to assist you.
◾ Leave details
⚠️ NOTE: Your employer may have payslips configured to not show the following information on every payslip. If the leave details are not showing and you want to know your entitled or accrued leave balances, speak to your payroll contact; who will aim to assist you.
⚠️ NOTE: We strongly recommend you read our article "Understanding Leave Balances in New Zealand" in conjunction with the below information.
Next are the details of your leave balances. Please see the above mentioned article for further information on your leave balances, and why there may be an accrued balance displayed.
◾ Payslips with Notes
⚠️ NOTE: Your employer may have payslips configured to show notes. These notes can may be useful to assist in when a certain "pay interpretation" was applied or the details of a deduction etc. Depending on the amount of notes showing; your payslip may be more than 1x page in total. If you have further questions about your payslip notes, speak to your payroll contact; who will aim to assist you.
Your employer may have your payslip configured to show payslip notes against your wages and earnings lines. This aims to give a summary of the hours and timesheet shift notes underneath the wage and earning line.
In the above example, we can easily identify that the time-and-a-half payment was due to a shift on the 7th January 2023, between 10am to 12pm. That timesheet shift had a shift note of "Called out to client 1 site for emergency works".
Your employer may have your payslip configured to show payslip notes against your deductions lines. This will detail the notes on file related to this deduction configured. This is typically a request number or a document number (e.g. IRD letter number).
